Step into history with us as we mark the opening of a memorial garden commemorating the tragic events of March 23rd, 1921, at O'Keeffe's Farm.
On that fateful night, six local members of 'C' Company, First Battalion, Cork No 1 Brigade, Irish Republican Army sought refuge, only to meet their untimely demise at the hands of the feared Black and Tans and RIC.
The garden will be officially opened by Lord Mayor, Cllr Kieran McCarthy, followed by guest speakers and plaque unveiling by family members.

The Clogheen & Kerry Pike Community Association (CKPCA) dedicated a portion of Ballycannon Park to create a memorial garden honouring six young local men who lost their lives during the War of Independence.
Iain McGregor graciously assumed the role of Master of Ceremonies, warmly welcoming the sizable gathering at Ballycannon Park. Among the distinguished attendees were Cork's Lord Mayor, Councillor Kieran McCarthy, as well as family members and relatives of the Ballycannon Boys, who solemnly unveiled three plaques at the garden's focal point.
Following this, the Memorial Garden received its official inauguration by the Lord Mayor of Cork, who eloquently reflected on the bravery of these young men, whose lives were tragically cut short amidst the tumult of rebellion.
Local historian John Mulcahy provided invaluable insights into the events of March 23, 1921, exactly 103 years prior. His expertise contributed to the detailed narratives on the plaques, highlighting the impact of those events on families and the pursuit of the traitor, Patrick 'Cruxy' Connors, who betrayed his former comrades.
After a moving wreath-laying ceremony led by the Lord Mayor and family members, St. Vincent's Chairperson, William McCarthy, addressed the crowd with empathy, sharing poignant anecdotes. Despite the cancellation of the planned exhibition game between St. Vincent's and Gleann na Laoi due to a waterlogged pitch, a memorial cup was established, and an annual game will be held to commemorate the occasion. St. Vincent's further demonstrated their support for the Memorial Garden Project by generously donating the proceeds from a showing of 'Ballycannon Remembered' at the Firkin Crane.
Jimmy Crowley, co-writer of "The Ballycannon Boys" ballad with Bert Ahern, performed the song before the Ballypehance Pipe Band concluded the ceremony with Amhrán na bhFiann.
Following the opening ceremony, all attendees were invited to the Community Center for tea, coffee, sandwiches, and an enlightening historical exhibition presented by ACT 1 Military Film Service
